To recognize previous texts in a new text is a way of creating a web that transcends place and time – something to show us how we are connected. However, allusion is a powerful tool in the creation of the narrative. Why shouldn’t we reopen the classics, especially of our childhood, to see how their ingredients react to the connotations our lives have built around them? Some artists undoubtedly believe that to trope on an already-created piece of art is a kind of sophistry undeserving of artistic attention, or at least a weak form of imitation. But that collection of dust, to me, means the world is changing, creating the detritus of traumas and joys of newer generations.

Many people don’t like for the classics to be messed with, as if they are sacred objects that should sit on a shelf collecting dust in an unchanging world. I’m kind of fascinated by the exploration of what people bring to a narrative, and Jonez and Eggers pretty much got to do the coolest thing ever, with the support of the original artist. I have not seen the film yet, but it is waiting on the shelf for me. Then, Eggers decided to transform the screenplay into a novel, exploring even more isles of the imagination. To help write the screenplay, he enlisted Dave Eggers. Spike Jonez decided to dramatize the story in film, adding context and backstory to the original narrative. The story begins with Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book, Where the Wild Things Are, a sparse, imaginative book about a little boy named Max who gets into trouble and while in his room, travels to a land of monsters. I ended up really, really liking this, especially after reading Eggers’s explanation at the back about all the iterations the story has gone through. It is a lesson in psychology for the children still living inside us.Īll of those sentences have a little clasp at the end of them.

I love what Max finds out when he goes to the land of the monsters - his discoveries gently remind us that the universe does not actually revolve around us, even though we view it through our own lens each day. I love what Eggers shows us about Max’s perceptions as a child in a world and household that don’t make sense to him. I think it should be required reading for anyone who has a kid or works with kids. I ended up really, really liking this, especially after reading Eggers’s explanation at the end about all the iterations the story has gone through.
